Let’s face it, being a stay a home mom is rarely glamorous. Glamour days for me now consist of straightening my hair and putting on jeans instead of yoga pants. Before the sun wakes up and until we fall asleep, someone is needing us. In fact, if you are a stay at home mom, than you are considered a professional “wiper.” Think about it. You wipe bottoms, faces, hands, noses, tables, floors, grocery carts and tears. The next day we wake up and repeat our wiping all over again.

Don’t get me wrong….I ABSOLUTELY love being a stay at home mom. I left my teaching job when we had our first and never looked back. I’ve always wanted to be a stay at home so it’s something I deeply cherish. But that doesn’t mean that my joy and energy as a mom never gets depleted.

I can start feeling over whelmed by every diaper change, every stray crayon, and every piece of food that sticks to the bottom of my foot as I walk past the high chair.  Can you relate?

If your mom whether you stay at home or not chances are you have felt this way. If you haven’t it’s only a matter of time. Below I put together 8 tips to help encourage you.

How to Keep A Fresh Perspective – 8 Tips to Being A Good Mom

1. Be kind to yourself – Yes, that’s right. We can be so hard on ourselves. We compare, criticize, and often focus on what we are doing wrong or where we fall short. Instead, focus on what you are doing that is loving. Right before bed, my daughter talks about what made our day “good.” I need this just as much as she does. It’s a good pause in our day to be grateful and to count our blessings.

2. Pour energy into you – I know it’s hard. I get it. But whether it’s a 10 minute workout, reading your favorite book for 20 minutes or spending the money to get a pedicure…do it. Our little kids are needy and our husbands can’t find anything without us. 😉 Moms, we are the center of the home. We make it a haven and keep it running. But don’t let yourself get burned out keeping everyone else going.

3. Unplug from the media – I have to do this often. Whether it’s social platforms or trendy magazines. Just refrain until you can consume those outlets without feeling negative about yourself, your home or your children. Remember, most people play their highlights on social media not their every day mundanes.

4. Make time for you – Stop being wonder mom and ask for help. Let your hubby wrangle the kids for an hour or two so that you can have a break. I just did this. I left Todd with both kids for two hours while I went window shopping. It was heavenly. I came home and shortly after there was an EPIC melt down. Both kids at the same time. But it was okay because I felt refreshed and refueled. I don’t know about you but the more stress and tired I am… the more short and snappy I can get. Kids have a intrinsic way of picking up on this and unfortunately this just makes them worse.

5. Teach your child how to occupy his or her self –  T.V is great and computers are awesome too. But I’m not talking about plopping your child in front of technology. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not anti-tv. Every Friday night is movie night at our house. I’m talking about teaching your child to find an activity and be engaged in that activity for an extended period of time. For my almost 4 year old, extended usually means about 40 – 60 minutes max. My almost 2 year old boy is about 15 minutes. 😉 I found that if I start my kids in an activity and quietly slip away then they both become lost in play.

6. Positive messages – I spent time earlier this week reading inspirational quotes about motherhood. I pinned the ones that really touched me here. I instantly felt my spirits lift. The quote that hit home the hardest,

 “You will never have this day with your children again. Tomorrow they will be a little bigger then they are today. This day is a gift. Breathe and notice. Smell and touch them; study their faces and little feet and pay attention. Relish the charms of the present. Enjoy today mama. It will be over before you know it.” – Jen Hatmaker

7. Seek a listening hear – Even if you can’t do any of the other items on the list. Call or text a mommy friend. We have to stick together. Sometimes our husbands don’t even understand. But having a mommy friend who can listen, not judge and say, “Yes, my child does the same thing!” This somehow makes being a mom better and more bearable. I am so thankful for all of my mommy friends.

8. Make Peanut Butter No Bake Energy Bites – This little treat is the perfect pick me up in the middle of the day. Best of all your little cuties can eat them too so you don’t have to hide out in the bathroom to eat them…unless you want more for you. Oatmeal, raisins, peanut butter that’s it! Only 3 ingredients.

Who doesn’t like raisins, peanut butter and oatmeal? These peanut butter no bake energy bites are sweet, creamy and full of gooey goodness. I love that this recipe has minimal ingredients and takes a short time to make. It’s also a great recipe for your little ones to help you make that encourages them in their fine motor skills.

These peanut butter no bake energy bites are a great snack on the go or just a healthy way to boost energy during those long days as a mom.

Peanut Butter No Bake Energy Bites

Peanut Butter No Bake Energy Bites
Prep Time:
10 minutes

Yield: 1 peanut butter energy bite
Ingredients
  • 2 cups gluten-free oats
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 5 tbsp. peanut butter or or other nut butter (see notes below)
Instructions
  1. Measure out 1 cup of gluten-free oats and blend for 10 sec. in a food processor. Pour into a bowl and set aside.
  2. Measure out 1 cup of raisins and blend in a food processor until it becomes a mushy ball.
  3. Keep raisins in the food processor and add 1 cup of gluten-free oats and continue to blend in the processor.
  4. Scrap raisin/oat mixture into the bowl with the rest of the oats. Measure out 5 tbsp of peanut butter and mix well together.
  5. Roll granola mixture into small balls. Enjoy right away or store in the fridge until ready to eat.
Notes

*I have made these with a non-peanut butter alternative. If you use a nut butter like SunButter or the brand Sneaky Chef that isn't oily than you will need to add 3 to 4 more tablespoons of "peanut butter" to make the energy bites stick together.

  1. Hi Alison. When my kids were small like yours I would take out all the pots and pans and bowls , put them on the floor and they would play for ages sometimes with spoons too. On tough days , even if a child is sick, I’d pop everyone in the car, buy icecreams and park near the beach. That way I could sit back too and relax a little. They still talk about those days watching then ‘icecream waves’! Getting out of the house can be a break in itself. It’s also nice to invite other moms over with their kids- then everyone gets to chat!

    1. Teresa, that is a great idea. I’ll have to get pots and pans out next time I cook my son especially would love that. I also love the idea of piling everyone in the car. What a great way to get a change of scenery in a loss stress environment. Thanks for sharing!

  2. My children are grown up and have children of their own. I would like to continue to get your recipes that are gluten free, dairy free and very little sugar, possible able to use natural stevia.

  3. Wonder if they could be made with cooked oat meal? Because of the phyto-chemicals in oats, I use regular oat meal and soak it in lemon water overnight before cooking.

    1. Hi Bill, I don’t think they would roll into the ball form using cooked oatmeal but other than that…I think it would still be a great snack. 🙂
