Grain-free Chocolate Glazed Donuts

It’s the most wonderful time of year. The Christmas season always puts me in baking mode. The heat from the oven makes the house warm and toasty and I love smelling baked goods float through the air. Even washing the dishes which is the one house chore I hate seems more bearable with Christmas music on.

Can I make an early New Year’s Resolution? I will become a fabulous baker. My first years being gluten and dairy-free I was uneducated and probably too adventurous in the baking department. Several expensive mishaps later – I labeled myself a bad baker. I focused on cooking and reached for store bought mixes whenever I needed to bake or we honestly just went without. πŸ™

Now that my little cuties are older and becoming more aware of delicious baked foods, I’m determined to give it to them. Fresh ingredients, natural sweeteners and all. My latest creation surprised the whole family. These Grain-free Chocolate Glazed Donuts were both fluffy and gooey and absolute hit.


The first batch I made, I actually made my kids go to bed just as I pulled them out of the oven. (I know, I’m such a mean mom!) My husband and I would have eaten the whole batch had I not promised our kids that they each would have a grain-free chocolate glazed donut with sprinkles waiting for them in the morning. LOL!


These grain-free chocolate glazed donuts are also dairy-free so they are perfect for those with dairy allergies. The base of the donut flour is coconut which light but nutritional filling. Oh yeah, this recipe is paleo friendly too. πŸ™‚ Tripe Bonus Points!!


My biggest concern was to have a healthy dessert without leaving my kids with a sugar buzz. I used coconut butter and raw honey so the donut gets a sweet kick without the over kill. The sugar level in the chocolate glaze can also be modified depending on what type of dairy-free chocolate chips you use. Using milk chocolate from Enjoylife will give your donut a sweeter kick while using a darker chocolate from Lily’s will give you more nutritional value and less sugar. The option is completely yours to make which is the benefit of making a recipe from scratch. My husband and kids didn’t notice a difference in taste but I personally loved the Enjoylife chocolate chip glaze better. πŸ˜‰

This was also my first time using these sparkly sprinkles from theΒ Geeky Hostess Sparkling Sugar. I choose them because they do not contain any artificial colors or ingredients. They have an ingredient that looked weird to me called, E-163. When I looked it up it was a natural food derivative approved by the European Union. I had full confidence in the product because I know that Europe has much higher standards in food ingredients than the U.S.

The taste was great. My only disappointment was the color of the sprinkles seemed to fade as they sat on the donuts. I had to sprinkle a few times just so that I didn’t lose all the vibrant colors while doing my photo shoot. I still plan on using them for my daughter’s upcoming birthday cake which will be white frosting so I’ll keep you updated. The only other down side was that I could only find the sprinkles here on Amazon not in the stores.

Grain-free Chocolate Glazed Donuts are the perfect healthy redemption on donuts. Fluffy chocolate coconut flour glazed with milk chocolate. (GF, DF & Paleo)

Yield: 8
    Dounut Batter
  • 2/3 cup coconut flour (sifted)
  • 4 eggs
  • 1/4 cup coconut butter (melted)
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 tbsp. cacao
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp. sea salt
  • 1/4 tsp. nutmeg
    Chocolate Glaze
  • 1/2 cup dairy-free chocolate chips at room temperature
  • 2 tbsp. non-dairy milk
  • 1/3 cup of shredded coconut (optional)
  • colorful sprinkles (optional)
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease your donut pan.
  2. In a large bowl, sift your coconut flour and measure out 2/3 cup and set aside.
  3. In a separate mixing bowl, add coconut flour, sea salt, baking soda and cacao.
  4. In a separate bowl mix together eggs, honey, melted coconut butter and vanilla. Once the wet mixture is well mixed, add in dry ingredients. Mix well.
  5. Place donut mixture evenly into donut pan and back for 8 minutes or until fork clean.
  6. Allow donuts to cool to room temperature or for about 3-4 minutes before moving them out of the pan.
  7. Once donuts cool to room temperature, place 2 tbsp. of non-dairy milk and place it in the microwave for 15-20 seconds. Milk should be slightly bubbly or steamy. Place hot milk over 1/2 cup of chocolate chips and stir until chocolate chips are completely melted. If you stir longer than a minute and chocolate is still not completely melted, you can pop the chocolate mixture again in the microwave for 5 seconds. Just be mindful not to scorch your chocolate.
  8. Next, spread chocolate glaze on top of each donut.
  9. Top donut with shredded coconut, sprinkles or leave plain.

    1. Hey Carol, I haven’t tried it but you could definitely try either Almond flour or Oat flour. If you do, report back and let us know how it turned out. I would also cut the egg down to 2 if you use almond or oat flour because coconut flour absorbs much more eggs. Everything else should be fine. Good luck!
